Macroptilium is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae. It belongs to the subfamily Faboideae.

Herbs, with (in ours) trailing, prostrate stems. Leaves pinnately 3-foliolate. Inflorescences axillary, of false racemes. Keel incurved; wings round, large, longer than standard and keel. Style with upper part thickened and characteristically abruptly curved through 90° just above its junction with the tenuous part and narrowed and slightly curved towards the apex, resembling a squarish hook. Pod linear.

Macroptilium
Hierbas erectas, rastreras o sarmentosas o bejucos herbáceos. Hojas alternas, trifolioladas; estípulas y estipelas diminutas. Flores bisexuales, zigomorfas, en pseudoracimos axilares, agrupadas en pares en las hinchazones nudosas del raquis; brácteas diminutas. Cáliz sub-campanulado o tubular, con 5 lóbulos iguales o desiguales; corola usualmente cardenal, el estandarte orbicular, reflexo, estrecho en la base, las alas estrechas en la base, mucho más largas que el estandarte y la quilla, la quilla estrecha en la base, torcida en la porción distal, fusionada al tubo estaminal; estambres 10, diadelfos; ovario súpero, unicarpelar, subsésil, comprimido, pubescente, con numerosos óvulos, el estilo torcido, engrosado en la base, el estigma punctiforme. Legumbre linear, cilíndrica, dehiscente mediante valvas que se abren en espiral; semillas numerosas, pequeñas, oblongo-cilíndricas. Género con 20 especies nativas del Nuevo Mundo.
Macroptilium
Erect, creeping, or clambering herbs or herbaceous vines. Leaves trifoliolate; stipules and stipels minute. Inflorescences of axillary pseudoracemes, the flowers grouped in pairs on the swellings along the rachis; bracts minute. Calyx almost campanulate or tubular, of 5 equal or unequal sepals; corolla usually cardinal red, the standard rounded, reflexed, narrowed at the base, the wings narrowed at the base, much longer than the other petals, the keel narrowed at the base, twisted in the distal portion, fused to the staminal tube; stamens 10, diadelphous; ovary superior, subsessile, flattened, pubescent, with many ovules, the style thickened at the base, twisted, the stigma punctiform. Legume linear, cylindrical, dehiscent by valves that twist on drying; seeds numerous, small, oblong-cylindrical. A genus of 20 species, native to the New World.
